The difference between marble grinding polishing and waxing polishing

2023-06-02 12:00:00Reading volume: 165

Marble surfaces can truly enhance the beauty of any space, providing a sense of luxury and elegance. However, over time marble becomes dull from normal wear and tear. That's why it's important to understand the two main methods used to improve the appearance of marble: grinding polishing, and waxing polishing.

1. Essential difference

Marble grinding polishing is a necessary process in the stone processing process, and it is also the first step in crystal surface care. It involves pressing grinding blocks made of inorganic acids, metal oxides, and other elements against the marble surface under high pressure from a mechanical grinding disc. This process creates a new layer of glowing crystals that can be up to 2mm thick. This layer is composed of a stone surface-modified composite crystalline layer, which has an ultra-bright and clear luminosity and can reach 90-100 degrees. Waxing polishing was a popular marble surface maintenance method in the 1980s and 1990s, but it gradually faded out of sight in the market. It involves applying a thin coat of acrylics and latex polymers to the marble surface immediately after polishing. After that, use a high-speed and low-pressure polishing machine and a fiber pad to rub the stone surface to make the resin coating brighter. While it provides a polished look, it is not as strong and the wax layer adheres to the surface of the stone as a resinous film.

2. Appearance difference

After the marble grinding polishing process is completed, the surface of the stone has high gloss, wear resistance, trampling resistance, and no scratches.  Stone will have a high-definition look that best accentuates the beauty and quality of the material. Conversely, waxing buffing gives a low-shine matte and blurred look. The wax layer applied on the stone surface is not waterproof, not wear-resistant, easy to scratch, oxidize and turn yellow, and lose the original beauty of the material.

3. The difference between postponement and surgery

Marble after polishing, the polished crystal layer on the stone surface needs to be used as a crystal surface for continuous care. Unlike waxing polishing, stone's pores remain open, allowing it to "breathe" and provide a degree of water and stain resistance. It is easy to maintain and can be operated on-site at any time. The surface appears uniform while maintaining the original color of the stone. However, waxing polishing will close the pores on the stone surface and inhibit its "breathing". Stone surfaces are easily damaged over time. Maintenance is also challenging, requiring the use of a wax remover and doing it over large areas at a time. Partial repairs will result in significant color differences on the stone surface.

To sum up, marble sanding polishing is the more durable method, while waxing polishing is more affordable. The crystalline layer formed on the surface of the stone is an excellent choice both in appearance and in the overall quality of the material. Knowing and understanding these differences is essential to properly maintain your marble surface and keeping it looking its best.
